Students in this course are assumed to be serious math majors and will be treated as such. Each week there will be a reading assignment, see below, and a homework assignment due the next Tuesday at 10:30. At sometime after 11 on Tuesday, there will be an exam each week that is one or more of the homework problems just handed in. In addition, there will be questions that check to see if you have read the assigned material for the week ahead. Your grade will be made up primarily from these exams, which should not be hard if you have done the homework and read the assignment.
After the exam, I will give a summary of the material you were supposed to have read for the week. What is left of Tuesday and most of Thursday, will be problems worked in class one way or another. This is somewhat dependent on the personality of the class. With a whole week to prepare, students should get the homework and be able to do well on the weekly exams.
I normally skip the first chapter on the grounds that students in this class should know all of that already, but I'm not this year. You'll have all of the first week to absorb it and there will be a problem set on it due the next Tuesday as well as the usual exam.
Week # 1, begins Jan 27, Read sections 1-7, and 9-10. Homework and exam due at noon on Tuesday, Feb 3.
Week # 2, begins Feb 3, Read sections 12-16. Homework and exam due at noon on Tuesday, Feb 10.
Week # 3, begins Feb 10, Read sections 17-18. Homework and exam due at noon on Tuesday, Feb 17.
Week # 4, begins Feb 17, Read sections 19-20. Homework and exam due at noon on Tuesday, Feb 24.
Week # 5, begins Feb 24, Read sections 21-22. Homework and exam due at noon on Tuesday, Mar 3.
Week # 6, begins Mar 2, Read sections 23-26. Homework and exam due at noon on Tuesday, Mar 10.
Week # 7, begins Mar 10, Read section 27-29. Homework and exam due at noon on Tuesday, Mar 24.
Mar 16-20, Spring break.
Week # 8, begins Mar 24, Read sections 30-32. Homework and exam due at noon on Tuesday, Mar 31.
Week # 9, begins Mar 31, Read sections 33-35. Homework and exam due at noon on Tuesday, Apr 7.
Week # 10, begins Apr 7, Read sections 51-52. Homework and exam due at noon on Tuesday, Apr 14.
Week # 11, begins Apr 14, Read sections 53-56. Homework and exam due at noon on Tuesday, Apr 21.
Week # 12, begins Apr 21, Read sections 58-60. Homework and exam due at noon on Tuesday, Apr 28.
Week # 13, begins Apr 28, Read sections 79-80, and 82. Exam will be held at the end of class on Thursday, April 30, and homework will be due at that time as well. Note this is not a normal week.
