Calculus I, 110.106, Fall 2006, W. Stephen Wilson

Problem Set Number 5, Due Th-Fri Oct 12-13.

These problems can be discussed in groups but must be handed in by each student. Keep in mind my warnings about how to learn in the Syllabus.

This set is due at the beginning of section. There will be a quiz in section on this material.

The reading assignment for the week is Sections 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3. This is the material you will be quizzed on.

I am very fond of "curve sketching" problems. They are really problems in analyzing functions, which is what calculus is all about. So, for all of the problems assigned this week ignore the instructions. Sketch the curves. Don't use graphing calculators (okay, you can take a peek). Describe when the graph is going up and down and when it is cup shaped up and down. Find the local extrema and the global extrema. Find the points of inflexion and the asymptotes.

Problems:

Section 5.2, pages 270-273.

2, 6, 8, 12, 20, 30

Section 5.3, pages 287-288.

6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 24, 28, 32, 34
