110.211 Honors Calculus III - Fall 2005

This course is devoted to the development of the calculus (differentiation and integration) of functions of several variables. Many of the ideas I will present in class are natural generalizations of concepts you have seen in one-variable calculus. The emphasis in this course will be on developing your mathematical intuition and in particular a good geometric intuition so that you gain a meaningful understanding of the theory, computations and applications that can be employed in a variety of contexts.

Prerequisite:

Calculus II, or 5 on the Calculus BC AP Exam. 4 credits.

Prof. Katia Consani

Exams:

There will be two midterm exams in class; the first one will be on Wednesday, October 19 and the second one will be on Tuesday, November 22. Both these exams will be held in class time. EXAMS SHOULD BE WRITTEN WITH PEN (NOT PENCIL). The final exam is scheduled for Tuesday December 20 (2-5PM) SHA100 and it will be comprehensive. There will be no make-up exams. If a midterm exam is missed with a valid excuse (students should always refer to the instructor for this matter), the grade for the exam will be a weighted average of the grades obtained on the other exams. The grade for an unexcused absence from a midterm exam will be zero. Anyone needing special arrangements for exams must notify the instructor by the second week of classes. The TA will hand out the exams in section, when they are graded. No math. books and/or papers and calculators are allowed during the exams.

Homework:

There will be weekly assignments, posted on this course website usually on Thursdays and they will be collected on the next week's section meeting. Talk to your Teaching Assistant on how to turn in a homework if you cannot go to class, but do not give it to me. The TA deals with the homework. On this web-page you will find the sections from the text that you should be reading before to come to class. I will try to observe this pre-determined schedule, but I might slow down or speed up if necessary. So it is important that you check regularly this course webpage. Late homework will not be accepted. Homework is the essential educational part of this course. You cannot expect to work problems on exams if you have not worked lots of homework problems. Therefore, I encourage you to spend an adequate time on homework regularly, each week. You can work together on the homework, in fact I encourage you to do so, but you should always write up your own homework solutions in your own words.

Grading:

Your final grade will depend on your performance on the homework and on the exams. The relative weights I will use are: Homework = 15%, Midterm Exams = 25% each, Final exam = 35%.

Sections:

Students enrolled in Section 01 (F12) meet with the TAs as follows:
