Getting your e-mail with POP and IMAP

(1/23/2008): Important Note: Starting from now, to use IMAP or POP3 to access chow email, you must use secure connection (SSL).

To change the setting for Outlook/Outlook Express:

Click Tools -> Accounts -> Mail.
Highlight the IMAP/POP3 account to chow, and click Properties. Click Advanced.
Below the line of the incoming server (IMAP or POP3), check the checkbox that says "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)".
Note that this changes the port number from 143 (IMAP) to 993 (IMAPS), or from 110 (POP3) to 995 (POPS).

To change the setting for for Mozilla Thunderbird:

Tools -> Account Settings -> Server Setting.
Under the security setting, check "SSL".
Do NOT check the check box "Use secure authentication".

Chow is a POP (Post Office Protocol) server, so you may choose to read e-mail on your personal or office computer by using POP. No configuration need be done on chow; the configuration at the client end depends on what mail client you are using. Mail clients (programs that retrieve and read mail) which support POP (Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Express,  Eudora, Mozilla, Thunderbird, etc) allow you to specify your mail server. You should indicate there that you want POP3, and specify the incoming mail server as chow.mat.jhu.edu. Your user name is just your login id on chow. Your POP3 password is the same as your password on chow.

Important Note: After you set up your POP3 account but before you close the setup screen, you might want to check the advanced options that says "leave a copy on the server". Otherwise your chow Inbox messages will be empty after downloading...

Chow is also a IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) server. You set up IMAP account on your client just as you do for POP3 with the exception that you indicate at the beginning that you want IMAP.

Important Note: chow's IMAP server is using home directory as IMAP root directory. However you can change that on your client by giving the path (usually IMAP in your home directory).

This is not new, but: chow is not a smtp server. Please use smtp.johnshopkins.edu for outgoing server for both POP3 and IMAP clients. Authentication (using JHED LID) is needed.

Email client settings: Incoming POP or IMAP mail server: chow.mat.jhu.edu. Use your chow account username and password. Outgoing mail server: smtp.johnshopkins.edu. Use JHED ID and JHED password. Enable SSL for both incoming and outgoing mail servers.
